Asacol (mesalazine) an anti-inflammatory drug, available only by prescription, is indicated to treat Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
IBD is a general term for any condition of chronic inflammation of the bowel wall with alternative periods of relapse and remission. The two main types of IBD are: Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). UC is a chronic inflammation of the colon wall and rectum. Crohn's disease may involve inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract anywhere from the mouth to the anus, but mainly in the ileo-ceacal region (this is the region between the small intestine and the colon).
The active substance is 5-aminosalicylic acid (abbreviated 5-ASA) known as mesalazine, or in the US and Canada , mesalamine.
